Spine Fractures
Vertebroplasty + Kyphoplasty
Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty, collectively call vertebral augmentation, are minimally invasive procedures used to treat back pain that results from fractures of the spine. During the procedure, the compressed and fractured vertebrae can have a balloon inserted to restore some of the height of the vertebrae. After removal of the balloon, material which we often call medical “cement” is placed in the fractured vertebrae which ultimately leads to pain relief. The procedure is performed using x-ray and with 1-2 mm opening in the skin where one can leave with just a band-aid. One level fractures are often treated in less than 10 minutes.
